Tendring: Glamping site could bring tipis to St Osyth

Plans have been put forward for an upmarket camping and caravan site at Chisbon Heath, near St Osyth.

Phil Sharlott hopes to create the glamping glamorous camping – site on land he owns off Kimbolds Heath Road.

The site would allow 15 touring caravans, up from the current five allowed without planning permission, plus six glamping pods and 15 tipis or luxury tents.

Mr Sharlott, 53, has worked for 30 years in the caravan park industry and runs consultancy company Positiv Park Development.

He said: “Kids can play in the trees and explore the wildlife. There is a massive demand for that as parents want their children to get back to nature.

“The days of people roughing it are done, people want some home comforts.

“We are not doing it for profit, this is under my own name not my company, and I honestly think it will be good for the area.

“It is a dream of mine coming true.”

There has been some opposition to the proposals from nearby residents who fear the development will cause noise disturbance and increased traffic.

However Mr Sharlott, who has lived at the site for 15 years, said: “I don’t want to upset the neighbourhood and I live there as well.

“There won’t be bingo on a Saturday night, music blaring out and people getting tanked up.”

Tendring District Council’s planning committee will decide on the plans at a meeting on Tuesday evening.

Council officers have
recommended the scheme for approval.
